Protecting Yourself from Skin Cancer

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

coppertone

I have been to the dermatologist several times throughout my life and if it’s one thing the doc repeats, it is sunscreen.

Here are a few tips to prevent skin cancer:

  • WEAR SUNSCREEN! (at least SPF 30)
  • Keep in mind that UV rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. So, if you are going to be out in the sun, try to stay in the shade. I usually don’t have to worry about that because I am usually at the mall around that time.
  • Put those stunna shades on! Find a pair that blocks most UV rays because not all of them do. Bigger, wider lenses will protect the skin around your eyes as well as your eyes itself. If you do not wear sunglasses, UV exposure can contribute to vision loss as you get older. All along, I thought celebrities were starting a trend. They really do care about their well being! Now I have a great excuse when I buy another pair of big sunglasses!
  • Work it out! Researchers have found when you exercise and stay healthy, it strengthens your immune system and helps the body defend itself from cancer cells.

Facts

  • It takes about five sunburns to double your chances of skin cancer. One blistering burn during childhood doubles melanoma risk.
  • 33% of skin cancers occur on the nose ( You better put extra sunscreen on! )
  • 63% of Melanoma deaths could have been prevented if every one did a monthly self exam
  • 75% chance of developing melanoma if you used a tanning bed in your 20’s

So now that we are aware, let’s start taking precautions by protecting our skin and well being!

Give Your Mom Edible Arrangements

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

edible

With Mother’s Day coming up, Sunday, May 13th, I have thought of a fantastic gift to give your moms!

Some moms love flowers, and some just think flowers are a waste of money and will die shortly after.

Well, why don’t you get her an edible arrangement? That beautiful arrangement of edible flowers that are made of fruit. It’s unique, delicious and nutritious. Whoever came up with the idea is genius!

I want one…but darnit, I’m not a mother. Anyone want to send me one? I’ll act surprised, promise!

Women’s Ultra Mega Multivitamin

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

vitamins

In a perfect world, people would eat healthy, nutritious foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, living in America — junk food capital of the world — it’s a bit difficult when you see a McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, or Jack in a Box at every other corner. Fast food places make it really hard for people to meet their nutritional needs.

I have come to a late realization that health is very important. I started this routine of going to the gym and working out three to four times a week. In addition, I am finding out a key component in losing weight and staying healthy is by having a well balanced diet.

Even though I try my best to eat a well balanced diet, I feel I am still lacking the essential vitamins to keep me healthy. It’s just near impossible to stuff five apples, three cups of brocolli, and two oranges everyday into my tiny little tummy.

Instead, I found a women’s multivitamin that I will be starting to take this coming week once it arrives in the mail. The formula contains a ton of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as Calcium for bone health, and Iron that women tend to lack, due to menstruation and inadequate consumption of iron-rich foods.

Be prepared for the size of the pill though… it truly is a Ultra Mega. I don’t know how I will be able to swallow it! Any tips?

Taming the Hottest Pepper on Earth

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

bhut

I love a little spice in my food, but when it gets too hot, I go running for a tall glass of milk. Why not water you ask? Because milk coats your mouth with a protein called casein that helps keeps your nerve receptors from going up into flames. Casein is a lipophilic (fat-loving) substance that surrounds and washes away the fatty capsaicinoids molecules (the stuff that makes peppers so damn spicy and hot) in much the same way that soap washes away grease.

If you ever wondered what the world’s hottest chili pepper is, it’s Bhut Jolokia, according to the Guinness Book Of Records. Bhut Jolokia grows in the Assam region of northeastern India, and it’s name translates as ghost chili.

Bhut Jolokia comes in at 1,001,304 Scoville heat units, a measure of hotness for a chili. It’s nearly twice as hot as Red Savina, the variety it replaces as the hottest. By comparison, a New Mexico green chili contains about 1,500 Scoville units; an average jalapeno measures at about 10,000.

Banish Your Hangover with Gatorade

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

hangover

Football teams usually waste their bucket of free Gatorade by pouring it on the head coach to celebrate their victory. But what they don’t realize is that America’s favorite sports drink, Gatorade, is a heaven sent for hangovers, and they should be saving it for the after party!

In order to cure a hangover, you must rehydrate and replenish your body with all the nutrients and electrolytes that you lost during your night out drinking. Gatorade will help replenish some of the lost electrolytes your body needs and also help rehydrate your body from all the water you disposed of because you were in the bathroom every five minutes the night before.

Chug a bottle of Gatorade before you sleep, and another one as soon as you wake up and you’ll minimize the horrible effects of your hangover.

For an extra boost to relieve the rest of your hangover symptoms, find some dioralyte and add it to your Gatorade. These hydrating salts will be your saviour.

Top 10 Cancer Fighting Foods

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

cancer

Every hour, your body replicates 6 billion cells, creating copies of your DNA. But if you don’t consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables that help construct those cells — your body could produce irregular DNA, which can eventually cause cancer.

Recommended here are the top ten cancer fighting foods by Erin Dummert RD, CD, a nationally recognized expert in cancer nutrition, to help stop cancer before it begins.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a plant chemical that has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate, ovarian, and cervical cancer. Tomato products, such as spaghetti sauce, tomato paste, and ketchup are particularly concentrated sources.

Broccoli Sprouts

Broccoli sprouts are an excellent source of sulforaphane, a plant chemical that may reduce the risk of stomach, breast, and skin cancer. While broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are also great sources of sulforaphane, broccoli sprouts are especially potent.

Berries

Berries get their rich color from plant chemicals called anthocyanins. These compounds are potent antioxidants, and protect against a variety of cancers including colon and esophageal.

Soybeans

Isoflavones present in soybeans and other soy foods (such as tofu, soy nuts, and soy milk) help to reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer by protecting cells from the harmful effects of estrogen.

Tea

Green and black teas are natural sources of catechins, potent antioxidants that act as powerful inhibitors of cancer growth, and may reduce the risk of liver, skin, and stomach cancer. The NCI is currently studying green and black teas for their cancer fighting abilities.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin, along with carrots, squash, red and yellow peppers, and sweet potatoes, are excellent sources of beta carotene. Eaten regularly, these powerhouses help reduce the risk of many types of cancer through their potent antioxidant capacity.

Spinach

Spinach is known as the “gold standard” of green leafy vegetables. Packed with lutein and vitamin E, both powerful antioxidants, spinach helps ward off cancer of the liver, ovaries, colon, and prostate.

Garlic

Garlic has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer of the stomach, esophagus, and breast. Mince garlic 10 minutes before cooking to increase its cancer fighting potential.

Pineapple

Pineapple is a good source of the antioxidant vitamin C. In addition, it contains the enzyme bromelain, which may protect against breast and lung cancer.

Apple

In addition to their antioxidant benefits, apples contain the plant chemical quercetin, which has been shown to reduce lung cancer risk and slow the growth of prostate cancer cells.

Each of these foods has been shown to impact cancer risk on their own. However, countless studies indicate a synergistic effect when eaten together, meaning that plant chemicals work together to produce a greater effect than if they were working alone.

Is Vitamin Water Better Than Regular Water?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

vitaminwater

Vitamin waters have been all the rage the past couple of years, but if it’s vitamins that you’re looking for, you might look elsewhere. An average bottle of vitamin water is packed with over 100 calories, and loaded with serious amounts of sugar for flavoring. It’s almost as bad as drinking soda, and surely won’t help you on your mission to keep fit.

To get your vitamin punch, drink regular water which has zero calories and down a multivitamin like Centrum instead. You’ll stay hydrated, and get the nutritional boost you’re looking for without the added calories.

Have a Face You Can Be Proud Of

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

facewash

Your face is your business card to the world. It’s what people see first, what they judge you by, and what they remember last - so it’s important that you leave a good impression.

Wash

The first step is to make sure that you’re washing your face morning and night, no matter how tired you are. Sleeping with a dirty face causes wrinkles, spots and blackheads. Before you hit the gym, make sure you give it a quick wash, and you’ll sweat clean and keep your pores from clogging with dirt.

Stick with an oil-free cleanser instead of soap. Soap tends to dry your skin, and strips it of it’s natural oils, causing your glands to respond by producing oil like a you just hit puberty.

Use: Anthony Glycolic Facial Cleanser loaded with aloe vera for soothing, glycolic acid to ease away fine lines, vitamins A, C and E to nourish.

Aftershave

Your face is one of the most sensitive parts of your body, and shaving is one of the most aggressive things you can do to it. A small dab of aftershave immediately after shaving will help soothe razor burn and offers immediate hydration.

Many of today’s products are packed with healing vitamins and fragrances that also make you smell nice and refreshed.

Use: ZIRH’S post-shave treatment calms your skin after shaving, and also makes an effective light moisturizer. Key ingredients are allatoin, aloe vera, cucumber extract, licorice extract, vitamin A and E.

Moisturize

Religiously apply moisturizer and sunscreen everyday, if you don’t want your face looking like a raggedy-old leather baseball glove by the time you’re thirty. Best time to apply moisturizer is after you’ve applied your aftershave in the morning. Make it a part of your daily routine and your skin will thank you later.

A light moisturizer at night will help rehydrate your skin from the day’s sun exposure, cold or air conditioning.

Use: LabSeries Daily Moisture Defense Lotion SPF15 lightweight moisture lotion continuously hydrates, smoothes and reconditions skin. Breakthrough technology delivers solar-activated protection from harmful UVA/UVB rays, smoke and pollution. Anti-oxidants help guard against the signs of aging.

Exfoliate

Most men never exfoliate because it sounds like something only women do, but keep in mind that it’s vital to keeping your mug looking good. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, grime, sweat, and dirt that regular washing doesn’t. It also helps balances and deep cleanses your skin to prevent blackheads, pimples and other common problems caused by the build-up of dead skin cells.

Use: Art of Shaving Facial Scrub gently exfoliates the skin’s surface and deep-cleanses pores to ensure that the skin breathes and functions properly. Formulated with Peppermint essential oil to tone and stimulate circulation, and white kaolin clay to absorb toxins and impurities from pores.

Turn Your Body Into a Massive Weapon

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Paul and Craig Pumphrey have built there careers breaking stuff. The two brothers are Breaking Technique Experts who hold five world records for outrageous feats of strength.

Fight Science used an accelerometer from their car crash labs to measure the amount of striking force each of these men have, and what you’ll see is amazing. Each of them are able to generate over 2000 pounds of striking force, which is equivalent to a 35mph car slamming into a brick wall!

This type of hard body training isn’t new. The Chinese were doing it thousands of years ago, back at the Shaolin Temple. What is new, is the ability to finally measure the exact amount of force that’s generated by a trained martial artist.

Wolff’s Law explains why ordinary human bones don’t shatter under such extreme force - “If loading on a particular bone increases, the bone will remodel itself over time to become stronger to resist that sort of loading.”

This is just one part of the complete Fight Science series, that airs on National Geographic.
